Our Mission:
Throughout this project, my group and had to primarily focus on using chemistry to support the chemical treatment of clean or dirty water. We first decided to determine whether a Life straw works efficiently or if it does not and it is not worth the price. After we chose to use the life straw for our project, we did a lot of research on what other people have said about it. It was very popular although there were many reports of it not working efficiently.
Once we got our hands on one of these straws, we noticed that it was a knock-off life straw but was pretty much the same thing. We then conducted a numerous amount of trials to determine how successful the life straw would be. After a couple of trials, a lot of the particles that we were mixing with the water were getting stuck in the straw itself and making every drink of clean water taste like chocolate milk. After we had to clean it by sucking up a ton of hot water to clean it out.
After we tested all of our different trials, we had to dissect the life straw and examine all of the different parts and the different filters. It was a challenge to dissect the Life straw without ruining anything that was inside of it because of how thick the plastic was on the outside. We then had to heat up a blade until it was red hot and cut through on two sides. We were then able to open it up and examine everything g that was inside of it.
Content:
Activated Charcoal- A form of carbon processed to have small, low volume pores that increase the surface area available. This was used in our project through our life straw.
micro fibers- A synthetic fiber finer than one denier or thread, having a diameter less than ten micrometers. This was used in our project in our life straw and was one of the main filtration systems.
bacteria- A member of a large group of unicellular microorganism which have cell walls. This was a main concept in our project because our main goal was to see if our straw could filter this.
High poly- iodine- is used to kill bacteria in water by replacing the chemicals necessary for a bacteria with the iodide, killing all of it.
Reflection:
I thought that this project went really well, everyone in my group participated and all worked very well together. We all put our brains together and came up with our whole project and why the life straw does not work. One peak for this project was collaboration, everyone in my group including myself worked very well together which i thought helped us complete our project more efficiently. Another peak is our completion on time with our project and our presentation completed on time.
One Pitt for this project was a member of our group was opposed to many of the ides that some of us came up with, we solved this by collaborating and working it out. Another Pitt for our group was the beginning of it, we struggled to come up with our idea at the start but after brainstorming we came up with whether the life straw was efficient and successful or did not work.
