The creative engineering project was a project and we had to choose a topic that should be changed. We had to create a system and gather evidence on what we can do to change this and why we should. My group and myself chose to do education and all the requirements that come with it. We brained many different points that we could do and improve. We then chose to focus on school start times and the different effects on middle school students and high schoolers. We researched the differences and effects on early school start times. Our final outcome that we came up with was that students in middle school and high school should start school later than 8;30, research done by the CDC and the ASA.
When we solved or problem and found our solution, we created a slide show with all of our data on it. All the research that was gathered was put on the slideshow and was then presented to our class and plan to present it to the NUSD school board to try and start school times later. Our group has enough confidence on our project that we could convince the board some what about this topic. (slideshow below)

- Identify the need- Found what was one of the main problems at school and one of them were school start times.
- Research the problem- Our group researched 12 amazing cites that proved that starting school later is much more healthier for middle schoolers and high schoolers in all kinds of ways. Research from the CDC and ASF proves test scores go up when teens start after 8:30 and also suffer health problems, debiesity, tiredness. When started after 8:30, teens have been proven to get higher test scores and stay healthier.
- Develop Possible Solutions (Brain Storming)- My group and I decided on some solutions. One of them was taking a couple minutes from each class and some time away from lunch to shorten the days so you can get athletic practice in after school. Another one is switching the elementary school start times and high schooler start times to make it easier on parents for driving there kids and making it to work
- Select the most promising solution- We selected the most promising and ideal solution and that was switching the elementary school start times and high school start times to start school at 8:30. This is more beneficial also for parents and how younger kids tend to wake up earlier than teens, there school should start earlier.
- Construct a prototype- Made a new schedule for high schools that is shown in our power point.
- Test and evaluate the prototype- We are still in the process of making the NUSD board test our prototype to start schools later.
- Communicate the design- We communicated our design by putting it on a power point and presenting it to our class. In the process of going to the school board.Redesign- We redesigned our schedule multiple times to fit our goal of starting after 8:30 am and still having the mandatory amount of minutes per week for public schools in California.
- Redesign- Our group did this by changing and redesigning our schedule many different times to meet the requirements for amount of time in each class. Also the minutes per week required in the state of CA.
- Repeat- We plan to repeat this project in the future after we present it to NUSD school board.
Reflection: In this project i learned many different things while working with my group members. Two negatives from this project were that was that if i kept myself focused and stop getting distracted i could have gotten a lot more done and not have socialized as much. Another one was keeping myself and group on task, i could have lead better by keeping myself on task, making sure that my group was as well.
Two positives were that i learned that When i only gave positive feedback, it made my group work more and more efficiently. Another is that When my group members had a idea, i was willing to listen and give it a shot at being a good one.
