When i look back at it, I thought we were never going to finish and there were some arguments in the beginning of our work. After we got to know each other it got better and better. I wish we did some things easier and different and didn't get so lazy in the middle because at the end we had to do a ton and scrambled at the end to get it all finished and add all the decorations and everything.
Physics, terms, and Concepts: velocity(v=the change in distance/change in time)-Similar to speed, velocity measures the distance traveled in a certain period of time. Our marble is probably the best example in our project. Acceleration (a= the change in velocity/ the change in time)- Acceleration is the change in velocity. Acceleration was shown a ton in our project all throughout or Rube Goldberg project. acceleration was used in our wheel and axel when the marble hits it it accelerates the wheel and the cookie falls in the milk. Kinetic Energy (KE=1/2mv^2)- Energy an object has due to motion. The pulley, car, and marbles all used kinetic energy. Work (W=fd)- The amount of energy put into something. The pulley showed a great example of this as the weight put in the top one made the bottom go up and other one go down. I found the pulley was one of the coolest parts in our project when it worked. Friction- i did not see to many examples of friction because for the most part everything was super smooth so that was not a problem at all. Force (F=ma)- Push or pull on an object. There were many examples of force and gravity is also a force which was used a lot. Some examples were when the marble was rolled down the ramp and hit the dominos, then they fell on each other, and when the car hit the marbles. Mechanical Advantage (Force of load divided by the Force of effort.) This was probably best used in our making of the project. A good example of this is the tools we used made it a lot easier to build and finish our project. Reflection:
The only thing that went poorly in our project was the project its self working 100% of the time. However we did catch our project work on film. Our bonding, finish piece and presentation went well in the end. Two new skills i learned and gained from this was how to make a pilot hole then use a screw when drilling and how to work together as a group and have everyone contribute to our project. Two things that i could have done better where contribute more on the physics and calculations part and not socialize with other groups as much. |
Project description: During this project, our team made an amazing Rube Goldberg Machine. Our theme was dunking a cookie into a glass of milk. A Rube Goldberg Machine is a machine that uses complicated steps and machines to complete and easy task. Our task was dunking a cookie into a glass of milk. We had 3 days to plan, 9 days to build and then 3 days to practice our presentation. We wanted to do something with cooking and dessert. We decided to have the machine make a cookie and then at the end it would be dunked into a glass of milk. We combined Rube Goldberg machine with a dessert designed project and got this. We decorated our board with cookies and all the steps for making the cookies then baking them. At the end when the all the ingredients have been mixed then baked then cooled, the very ended they are finished by being hit into a wheel and axel and ending up in a glass of milk. The first 3 days we made a blue print and planned our whole project out. We found all the measurements for the pieces that were going to be used to put on our project and got all the materials needed and required. Our Rube Goldberg machine consists of 5 our of 6 simple machines. They were the pulley, the lever, the inclined plane, the wheel and axle, and the screw. If you look at our project, i made the two inclined planes next to each other and also made the wheel and axel. Then we had 9 days to build. We started off with adding most of the inclined planes and just worked down. Myself and a teammate had screwed on the majority of the inclined planes, the walls for them, and touched them up when they were not working. I also put the bases on the bottom of our board, screwed on the tube made the lever, the small holes so the ball can stay there and would not move, and made the pulley. I made the majority of the stuff and put them on, but my group gave me the measurements and told me what to build and what the measurements where to cut wood and other materials. We all came up with great ideas and worked together as a group very well. There was very little fighting, great ideas, and very friendly and nice to each other. The last 3 days we had to plan for our presentation along with any days we wanted to come before, after, or during school. We explained our whole project, the physics, and everything to it. I said al the simple machines to our project and how started the Rube Goldberg machine. We had practiced not that much but the presentations went pretty well. I was lost at times on the physics tho! But my group helped me the whole way. |
